Here’s a closer look at Team Philippines’ uniform for the 32nd SEA Games
Designed by Francis Libiran, the official barong outfit is named ‘Araw’
Fashion designer Francis Libiran continues to proudly represent the Philippines by designing the official uniform for our athletes participating in the upcoming 32nd Southeast Asian Games in Phnom Penh, Cambodia this year.
In 2019, Francis was appointed by the Philippine Sports Commission to design the official parade uniforms for over 2,000 athletes and officials during the 30th SEA Games held in the Philippines. His creation, the iconic “Flag” barong, received widespread acclaim.
Last year, the designer was once again commissioned to be the official designer for Team Philippines’ parade uniforms, where he introduced the “Agila” barong. This design showcased intricate art deco embroidery inspired by the majestic Philippine Eagle.
For the 32nd SEA Games, Francis has created “Araw,” a barong design that embodies the values of liberty, peace, and valor, not only for the athletes but for all Filipinos. Francis’ team describes the Francis Libiran ‘Araw’ as made from Philippine jusi fabric, with embroidery using fine threads and materials. The barong features the art of the Philippine flag, with overlapping shades of blue over a small bed of red. The focal point of the entire Barong Tagalog is an intricately embroidered sun or “araw,” with its rays stretching over the sash and collar.
The biennial multi-sport event is scheduled to take place from May 5 to 17, 2023.
