Take a walk on the surreal side with this week’s back to back art shows
Winding April down will be Space Encounters Gallery‘s back-to-back exhibits that blur the line between reality and fantasy.
Night and Day, Sherwin C. Tan’s upcoming solo show at Space Encounters Gallery, is an exploration of the two faces of reality: light and darkness.
Beneath the innocuous charm of Tan’s art lies a deeper message, hinted at by the contrast of dark tones against brighter ones. “I am not focused only on the sunny side of life,” the artist says in a statement. “Darkness is a real part of our journey, [but] you will see hope in each dark painting that I do.”

Sleepwalkers, on the other hand, delve into the realm between waking and dreaming. A group show that features the works of contemporary abstract artists Marlon Magbanua, Josep Pascual, Jayson Muring, and Michael Pastorizo, it poses an existential question to the viewer concerning “where one originates from, and how it defines man’s propensity to coexist and connect with those around him on a level [that’s] beyond physical,” as the show’s official release describes. Each artist approaches this theme from a particular perspective: Pascual plays with the idiosyncrasies of emotions; Muring pulls inspiration from childhood memories spent in bucolic Marinduque; and Pastorizo journeys into the world of reverie using florals and geometry as symbolism.

As disparate as these two exhibits may seem, surreal and ethereal elements tie all the artists’ works together. Gallery owners Thor Balanon and Wilmer Lopez sum up what guests can expect: “We’re excited to see Tan’s works interacting with this new crop of abstractionists. We want to create a very dreamlike atmosphere in these shows.”
