Calvin Klein celebrates the modern man with the launch of its latest scent Calvin Klein Defy. Adding a new chapter to its fragrance portfolio, the brand fronts Hollywood leading man Richard Madden as today’s epitome of authenticity and masculinity.
“Calvin Klein is a brand that resonates with everyone globally,” says Paolo Recto, senior product manager, during the recent Calvin Klein Defy virtual event. “And this new launch is dedicated to the younger, edgier millennial Calvin Klein man who takes risks. They value authenticity and continuous growth that is rooted in Calvin Klein’s rebellious DNA and today’s changing codes of masculinity. Now, we are proud to present our Calvin Klein man and he is none other than Richard Madden.”
The campaign documents the journey of defiance and triumph of the award-winning actor. It showcases Richard in a “series of vulnerable, self reflecting and defying moments that culminate into a courageous leap of faith, a symbolic metaphor for personal defiance and daring to take risks.” Wearing an iconic Calvin Klein look of jeans and white t-shirt, the “Eternals” star exudes a rebellious stance perfect for the Defy campaign.
“I describe the Defy fragrance as vulnerable. At the same time, it’s fresh but it’s moody and it’s got a kind of weight to it,” tells Richard in a behind-the-scenes video. “What resonates with me about the Defy campaign is this idea of challenging yourself and of accepting these things that we face that are difficult and overcoming them. This is inspiring for me.”
As for the scent itself, Defy opens with a fresh blend of citrus highlighted by crisp bergamot, adding a sense of vulnerability. “It is bright and exposed yet our Defy man takes risks,” states Tin Conde, senior training manager. “We layered in lavender absolute, a naturally rough and resilient plant, to amplify the freshness and evoke a feeling of authenticity. And last but not least, it has this sturdy and rugged vetiver oil which is the heartbeat of this fragrance that speaks with courage. Amber adds sensuality, texture, and warmth that ignites a spark in the fragrance leaving a lasting and alluring interest.”
