Markkus on staying smart, strong, and summer ready

Having a double degree as a senior student is no easy feat, but for 21-year-old student and model Markkus, it’s all about balance. “I’m currently pursuing a major in International Studies, specializing in European Studies, with a minor in Psychology, along with another major in Business Management,” he shares.

Despite his demanding academic schedule, Markkus makes time to hit the gym five times a week. In between, he travels and does modeling on the side. “Going to the gym doesn’t feel like a chore to me. It’s like playing a video game—I enjoy it. I don’t have to force myself,” he adds.

When it comes to traveling, Markkus loves exploring new places on foot. He prefers beaches and mountains when he’s abroad, always on the lookout for scenic views and local cuisine. In this conversation, he also shares insights into his fitness routine, summer essentials, and favorite fragrance. Read on:

How would you describe your fitness routine?
I spend about 1.5 hours at the gym. My workout routine is structured to target different muscle groups—push, pull, and legs for the first two days, followed by an Arnold split for the last. I like this setup because it doesn’t feel repetitive. I’ve found that this flow works well for my body, and I genuinely enjoy it.

What motivates you to stay fit?
Motivation can only take you so far—it’s discipline that keeps me going. Staying fit is more of a mental challenge, but what helps is that I truly enjoy what I’m doing.

What’s the most challenging part of staying fit?
For me, it’s the diet. If you really want to build a good physique, it all comes down to what you put into your body. Hitting all the necessary nutrients while staying in shape can be tough.

What’s the best part about being fit?
You feel good—physically and mentally. The endorphins make a huge difference. Being fit isn’t just about looking good; it boosts your confidence because you know you’re taking care of yourself.

How do you define sexy?
Being smart is sexy—not just book-smart, but street-smart. Emotional intelligence is incredibly attractive. For me, it’s more about personality than looks.

What do you think is your sexiest trait?
I’d say persistence. For me, it’s all about grit and determination.

Guilty pleasure?
Eating Samyang at 2 a.m. There’s something different about munching on it at midnight!

What’s your advice for those wanting a summer body?
You can’t expect to look like what you see on social media—there’s no shortcut. Just go to the gym, eat right, and stay consistent.

What are you looking forward to this summer?
I’m looking forward to traveling. I love visiting Japan—it’s one of my favorite destinations.

Summer essentials?
AirPods—music is a must for me. I also love perfumes and always carry my bag with all my essentials: my wallet and a water bottle to stay hydrated.

Signature scent?
Parfums de Marly’s Layton.

What body part are you most proud of?
My chest. It’s my strongest muscle group, and it reflects the effort I’ve put into my body. I’m obsessed with self-improvement—I have tunnel vision when it comes to bettering myself.
