LOOK: This NBA signature footwear gets a Filipino twist
Adidas collaborates with Jappy Agoncillo for D.O.N. Issue #3 ‘Origin Story’
Adidas Philippines has been supporting Filipino artists for their creativity and vision. Recently, the brand has collaborated with muralist Jappy Agoncillo for a tee capsule called “Manila Hoops.” Now, the partnership is moving on to footwear as Adidas and Jappy release NBA Donovan Mitchell’s signature basketball shoes reimagined in a Filipino-inspired colorway.
The D.O.N. Issue #3 “Origin Story” is inspired by three elements. One is the vibrant Filipino street style. Next is the artist’s love for superhero comic books, and lastly the heroic origin story of All-Star Donovan Mitchell. Intertwining these elements, the sneakers feature a wing tip icon that represents Donovan’s college team, half-tone pattern symbolizing classic superhero colors in classic comic books, and tiger stripes which are both significant to Jappy and Donovan.
“The concept of the design is about honoring the past and looking toward the future,” says Jappy. “Taking inspiration from how D.O.N. was named after Donovan Mitchell’s ‘Determination Over Negativity’ mantra, the design pays homage not only to the history of wins and losses of Donovan, but also the endless possibilities that the future has in store with continuous hard work and determination.”
This collaboration with Jappy is a continuation of Adidas’ support for Filipino creators. “We at Adidas Philippines know and value the importance of being true to one’s roots,” says Adidas Philippines Brand Communications and Sports Marketing Manager JD Cortez. “Furthermore, the brand truly wants to stay consistent; to inspire and empower local talent. Like our past Filipino-inspired projects and through collaborations such as this, we are proud to give local artists like Jappy Agoncillo the platform to represent and illustrate the true essence of being Filipino beyond what the world already knows about us.”
Adidas Philippines has previously collaborated with creatives like Juanito “Quiccs” Maiquez and Gregg “Egg Fiasco” Guleserian.
