Nike Sustainability: The new Space Hippie 01 Carbon Green is literal trash

The shoe is made of at least 50 percent recycled materials by weight as part of Nike’s journey toward zero carbon and zero waste

To date, Nike’s Space Hippie 01 Carbon Green has got to be the most sustainable sneaker of the brand. Back in 2020, Nike launched the first collection of the Space Hippie model, from 01 through 04, centered on sustainability. This month, August 2021, the brand adds another footwear to the collection which boasts of 50 percent recycled materials by weight.

“Its ‘Space Waste Yarn’ upper includes about 90 percent recycled polyester made from recycled plastic bottles, t-shirts, and yarn scraps. A soft, Crater Foam midsole combines Nike Grind with a blend of foams for stability and a unique aesthetic, while the shoe’s insole is made from ZoomX foam scraps, the same cushioning that creates the ultimate ride in Nike’s NEXT% running shoes,” the brand details.

In addition to that, Nike also scrapped the double box which is used to ship the shoes. These pairs will now be shipped in a single shoe box which is made from repurposed material and printed with plant-based ink. Kudos to Nike for thinking sustainability through and through.
