CHECKMATE: Louis Vuitton’s spring-summer 2022 is inspired by chess

Virgil Abloh centers his vision on strategy and clash of entities

For Louis Vuitton’s spring-summer 2022, artistic director Virgil Abloh gives life to chess pieces dressed as modern day couture silhouettes. The queen, the knight, and the pawn are dressed as models in tall hats, long line skirts, and oversized headphones as gears for battle. This vision comes from Virgil’s logic when it comes to clash of identities and culture—hence the odds in the game of chess.

Another inspiration for this collection is the influence of Japanese and Chinese martial arts from Virgil’s youth with floor length skirts, padded vests, and armor-looking outerwear disguised as combat attires either in black and white or vibrant colors. Louis Vuitton has been shining light on neon green, pink, blue, sea foam green, and yellow for several seasons now.
