Matte Matters: Inside Celine’s Matte Lip Balms

Eight shades that blur the line between care and color

There’s something quietly radical about restraint and Celine knows it well. With the expansion of its Le Rouge collection, the house introduces a new kind of lip essential: the matte lip balm that doesn’t try too hard, yet lands exactly where it should.

First teased during La Collection de l’Arc de Triomphe by Hedi Slimane, the drop feels like a natural evolution—less about spectacle, more about control. Eight shades enter the chat: one universal, seven tinted, all buildable. Think of it as color that adapts to you, not the other way around.

The formula leans into care without losing its edge. A 94 percent natural-origin blend of oils, waxes, and squalane then meets black rose extract and hyaluronic acid for lips that feel as good as they look. The finish? Matte, but not flat. It mirrors the natural texture of lips, soft-focus rather than full-on statement.

Application is intentionally effortless. The wide, beveled stick glides on with a kind of nonchalance that feels very Celine—precise, but never precious. And then there’s the scent: a subtle rose with a powdery sweetness that lingers just enough to be remembered.

But let’s be honest—the object matters just as much. Encased in faceted silver, stamped with the Triomphe emblem, and housed in its own velvet pouch, this is less makeup, more artifact. Refillable, weighty, and undeniably chic, it sits somewhere between 18th-century classicism and Art Deco clarity.

Shade-wise, Celine speaks in nuance. Incolore is exactly what it sounds like—a transparent, no-notes essential. From there, the tones build quietly: Ariane offers a sheer coral lift, while Alienor leans into a natural brown with an almost undone ease. Phedre brings a smoky purple edge, subtle but subversive, while Raphaelle cuts through with a luminous red warmed by orange undertones. Hortense softens into a rosy brown, Constance mimics that just-bitten flush, and Eurydice lands somewhere between pink and red, like your lips on their best day.

Le Rouge Celine Collection Matte Lip Balm will be available starting April 2, 2026 at Greenbelt 3, Makati City
