Here’s a closer look at Adidas’ most advanced footwear to date

Featuring the new 4DFWD

Can you imagine testing out five million variations on 4D midsole technology? Well, you don’t have to because Adidas just did that and came up with an industry-first footwear that gives runners the chance to reach their full potential. Meet the new 4DFWD.

So what makes the Adidas 4DFWD exceptional? This shoe features the first-ever bowtie-shaped midsole that transforms vertical pressure into a horizontal force giving the wearer a smooth forward transition when on motion.

Aside from testing out millions of variations, Adidas also gathered eighteen years of real-world athlete performance data to identify which design would change the game for runners. They also collaborated with Carbon Digital Light Synthesis to create a precisely-tuned midsole offering a scientifically-proven forward motion advantage.

“When humans run, our forward motion is interrupted every time our foot hits the ground leading to a subtle stop-start motion between strides,” said Jane Pappalardo, professor of mechanical engineering at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. “This is true for all runners – no matter your ability. At the MIT Sports Lab, we are developing innovative technologies that offer a direct solution for overcoming that intrinsic challenge. And the new 4DFWD does just that.”

The new 4DFWD sports a new Continental outsole that provides extra grip to the runner whatever the weather is while boasting an all-new Primeknit+ and engineered mesh upper construction for that extra support and snug fit.

“At Adidas, we’re always looking at the ways technology and data can intersect to create the best possible products for our runners,” shared Charlotte Heidmann, senior product manager at Adidas. “With the new 4DFWD, we made the impossible possible, challenging the laws of science by using a unique performance benefit designed to move you forward. With every stride, the midsole of the Adidas 4DFWD turns vertical impact into horizontal forward motion for an unstoppable smooth forward transition and new underfoot experience throughout the run”.
