Last Sunday, April 4, 2021, showbiz royalty Luis Manzano and Jessy Mendiola made their intimate civil wedding public via a series of social media posts. As the married couple posted photos on their socials, we couldn’t help but notice and fall for the newlyweds’ fashionable attires during their big day. As Jessy glowed in a Patricia Santos’ timeless bridal dress, Luis looked dashing in a Paul Lazaro old rose suit.

It was a challenge for Paulo and Luis’ team when it came to the fitting, since the pandemic still restricted everyone to gather freely and gallantly. Fittings were done in the most minimal and contactless way possible through virtual meets. “A custom suit requires a lot of physical and close contact with the client to make sure the fit of the suit is perfect. Since we need to find ways to adapt to the new normal, we thought of new ways like doing the consultation and fittings via online,” Paulo shares with Manila Bulletin Lifestyle. But with the guidance of Luis’ longtime stylist, Rex Atienza and the bride, Jessy, Paulo was able to transform a Gucci silk fabric into a momentous old rose three-piece ensemble.

We had an exclusive one-on-one chat with Paulo, revealing fashionable ideas for all the soon-to-be-grooms out there. From what style of suit to wear, trends to watch out for in the coming months, and budget-friendly yet polished styles, here are some of his tips:

Has there been a surge in popularity with double-breasted suits for grooms like Luis’?

Double-breasted suits are actually not the most popular choice for a grooms’ suit because the market leans toward the simplicity and effectiveness of the single-breasted suit more. However, depending on the groom’s style choices, I sometimes recommend double-breasted suits to people who wear suits on a regular basis. This gives their groom’s suit a little more edge and excitement.

What do you think will be the groom suit trends for 2021/2022?

Anything relaxed and a little casual will be more seen at weddings because we are now starting to adapt to smaller and more intimate venues. However, it should not stop the groom from showing his personal sense of style on his special day.

For soon to be grooms who have limited budget and can’t afford designer suits, what are the basic things to consider when choosing what to wear on the special day?

You can always go with the basic colors for your suit, keep it subtle but with your own personal style, whether it be your tie or or your socks. It’s not all about how expensive your suit is, it’s about how you feel when wearing it. Just make it clean and simple, don’t overdo yourself.
