LOOK: Commonwealth celebrates arrival of Nike Air Max 1 ’86 OG Big Bubble in PH

Nike partners with creatives Fern Tan and Annika Sy to commemorate the milestone

Did you know that the ultra-rare Air Max Big Bubble, originally released on Mar. 26, 1987, is a reengineered version of the 1986 original? This is because the OG air unit of the ’86 version cracked due to cold temperatures, resulting in Nike engineers shrinking the window mid-production.

This year, as sneakerheads celebrate Air Max Day 2023 on Mar. 26, the Air Max 1 ’86 OG Big Bubble makes a comeback. Available in the color-blocked University Red colorway, the iconic shoe iteration is now available at Commonwealth.

To further celebrate the milestone, the brand teamed up with creatives Fern Tan and Annika Sy. “While the Philippines has an amazing pool of artists, we chose Fern and Annika since they represent Commonwealth’s values of authenticity, community, and style,” says Commonwealth. “They pave their own unique path, create exciting art, and connect with diverse groups of Filipinos – all done with a dedication and playfulness distinct to them. We believe that this talented creative pair could play a big part in inspiring and building the creative community in the country.”

For music producer Fern Tan, it’s not about standing out all the time. He prioritizes what feels good. “I just like to be lowkey; it’s not about looking the best or being super different. As long as I feel good—that’s how I am with everything in life,” he shares.

As someone who works well with sounds, he provides all-around sound solutions at Kindred Productions PH (@kindredproductionsph) and works on the night-out experience at his co-owned space, Ugly Duck Tapas Bar & Rooftop Lounge (@uglyduckpoblacion).

As a practicing graphic designer and photographer, Annika Sy expresses herself through portraits, mixed media edits, digital illustrations, and by being experimental with her fashion sense. She works closely with Kindred (@kindredism) and @uglyduckpoblacion to further hone her skills.

“My style is really fluid; recently, I’ve been exploring and experimenting with a mix of feminine and masculine cuts,” shares Annika. “I also like to put color in my outfit through the shoes or accessories that I wear.”
