How often do you pay attention to your socks? We bet not much. Any standard-issue white gym socks would often suffice for the typical guy, with variety coming in only with the sock length.

Canada’s Prime Minister Justin Trudeau proves yet again that he can show most men up, as at the United Nations General Assembly a couple of days ago, a detail in his outfit got picked up by the media:

From Getty Images to William effin’ Shatner, Trudeau’s Chewbacca socks got people snapping photos and tweeting.

This isn’t the first time that Trudeau gave deliberate thought on what shows up on his ankles. He has worn another Star Wars-themed pair in May to a meeting with Ireland’s Prime Minister:

Here’s how you do mismatched socks right: C3PO on the right foot, R2D2 on the left.

In June, during a guesting at Live with Kelly and Ryan, he represented Canada with a maple leaf-themed pair. Trudeau even presented the talk show hosts Kelly Ripa and Ryan Seacrest a pair with their faces emblazoned on them.

During Pride Week at Toronto, also in June, it was a two-for-one banger: he sported a rainbow-striped pair that was visually occasion-appropriate, and they also read Eid Mubarak, in observation of the end of Ramadan.

Stylish and political. We approve.

There are more instances of Trudeau spicing up his look and sending a message with a well-chosen pair of socks; you can find photographic evidence of them all over the internet.

But a good sock game means more than just picking an outrageous-looking pair at the department store. Pants length and shoe style are two crucial factors. As Trudeau has demonstrated, while his socks are the eye-catching details, the cut of his suits and his choice of shoe style and color are the subtler choices that set the stage for whatever declaration he’d like his socks to make.

Here are other dudes that have some good—or at least interesting—sock game.

We have to admit, we picked Drake and this particular sock choice for the drama. (In case you haven’t noticed, he’s sporting the “Work” socks from Rihanna’s Fenty for Stance collection.)

Though he frequently wears too-low socks to go with his dapper outfits, Jidenna, one of our Fantasy Street Dapper Kings choices, has also shown his understanding of how patterned and colored socks can elevate a look into something more.

Ilaria Urbinati is one of Hollywood’s hottest stylists; among her clients are well-dressed dudes Rami Malek, Riz Ahmed, and Donald Glover. It was two other actors from her roster, though, who showed up at the talk show circuit sporting flashes of stylish color on their ankles.

Here’s Bill Skarsgard, now better known as f*cking Pennywise:

And here’s James van der Beek, forever Dawson in our minds (though he is also known now as Diplo?):

Our takeaway from these guys (except for Drake): well-cut suits + colorful socks = serious steeze. Take notes for the next time you go socks shopping.
